MARIPOSEO
Once out of the chrysalis, the butterfly’s wings are soft and crumpled. It must pump fluid into its wings and wait for them to harden before it can fly. Thereafter, its main goals are to feed on nectar, reproduce, and continue the cycle. This relationship between deeper essence and outward appearance was at one time considered unproblematic. Over time, however, this connection came to be perceived as uncertain, leading to a shift where sensory experiences gained independence and opened the door to an overflowing play with the senses. Amidst obscured reflections and fleeting shadows, concealed gestures are set into motion—delicate, elusive, and protective. This studio show embraces baroque aesthetics and certain practices of the closet; it considers how exuberance and expressiveness can be seen as sensory excess that mimics and protects against a hostile environment, like the imitation of eyes or euphemistically overwhelming predators.by and with juan felipe amaya gonzalezperformance: Camilla Strandhagen, Ainhoa music: carlos andrés ricospace and costume design: luisa rodríguez jiménez (aka mujer cobra)mentorship: Catalina Insignares, Pau Masalodramaturgical advice: Joshua Wickelights: eliška kociánová

GOLD MILK 1 . SITE B

Godmilk is a provocative performance and audio-visual art installation that explores the intersections of the care economy, capitalist extractivism, and the gamification of female bodies. Set in a milk factory designed as an immersive environment, the project reflects the commodification of female bodies and motherhood, creating a visceral connection between the audience and the realities faced by women in society. The core premise of Godmilk revolves around three postpartum mothers who pump breast milk live on stage. This act serves as both a literal and metaphorical representation of the systemic life force that breast milk embodies, while also critiquing the exploitation of women’s bodies in the capitalist economy. The installation utilizes breast milk as a powerful symbol, drawing parallels between the commodification of female bodies and the treatment of dairy cows in milk production. Godmilk investigates the care economy by examining the historical roles women have been assigned in caretaking and the societal expectations that accompany these roles. It critiques capitalist extractivism by highlighting how women’s bodies are commodified for profit, as well as the gamification of their lives through societal scoring systems. The project delves into how women are evaluated based on their productivity and recovery, drawing parallels with video game mechanics that rewar performance.

The visual installation mimics a milk factory, incorporating elements that evoke both nourishment and exploitation. Through a blend of live composition, digital art, and performance, Godmilk aims to create a multi-sensory experience that immerses the audience in its themes. Movement plays a crucial role in expressing the emotional and psychological weight of motherhood and societal expectations, enhancing the narrative and thematic depth of the installation. By featuring postpartum mothers, Godmilk addresses societal taboos surrounding motherhood and the recovery process. It also explores the dark web market for breast milk, highlighting the exploitation of women’s bodies and the desperation of those seeking nourishment. The installation functions as a metaphorical video game in which FLINTA (Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Non-Binary, Transgender, Agender) bodies navigate scoring and competition, further illustrating the pressures placed on women in contemporary culture.
Godmilk serves as a cultural critique that challenges audiences to confront uncomfortable truths about society's perceptions and treatments of female bodies. It emphasizes intersectionality by acknowledging the diverse experiences of women across the diaspora, inviting dialogue about the need for societal change. The project ultimately seeks to raise critical questions about how far society must go to support women and whether exploitation will continue to persist.

The installation invites the audience to engage with the performance, fostering a deeper understanding of the themes presented. By posing provocative questions, Godmilk encourages reflection on the care economy and the exploitation of female bodies. Additionally, it emphasizes community involvement by engaging local postpartum women, providing a platform for their voices and experiences.

BRAVURA refers to bravery, rage, a form of masculinity, as well as a virtuosic solo moment in music. In a fictional club setting, the performance installation juxtaposes early salsa mythology with the contemporary migration experience. It delves into the cultural depths of salsa as a representation of Latin American immigrant identity, tracing its radical roots to the marginalised Latinx communities in 1970s New York. Salsa offers a rich tapestry of narratives from the diaspora, intertwining stories of resistance, identity, and memory. It’s a
testament to the empowering power of dance, where every movement has its history and every step is a testament to a collective journey. The audience is invited to walk freely through a set created in collaboration with the artist Matti Schulz, in which two bodies move in syncopation through images echoing an imaginary extravaganza.

HABITAT / HALLE E

Habitat / Halle E is Doris Uhlich’s biggest choreography in open space to date. The naked bodies of 120 people flick, vibrate and slap against each other to electronic sounds and abstract techno tracks. The performers celebrate their unity in diversity. As individuals and as a crowd at the same time they conquer the space in a choreography that is captivating, highly energetic and, at times, collectively reposing. Hall E is transformed into a habitat full of unexpected life forms – the audience moves about freely in the available space. The project transcends conventional ideas of the body, of dance and of nakedness in a subversive manner.

Habitat is a utopia. A shameless but also a free-of-shame hymn to a naked body beyond cultural inscriptions and conventional ideals of beauty. The body is not devalued to the level of a fetish, an object; and carnality is neither metaphorically nor poetically ideologised but understood in a material sense and is therefore presented in all its mass and weight yet also in its fragility.

Habitat can be developed in different places with local people. Doris Uhlich is interested in working with large ensembles, which are developed temporarily at specific places in order to transform dance into a collective ritual.

IF I DON’T DANCE IT, IT WILL HURTMIME Centrum / Bethanien, Berlin 2018
We want to explore different ways of being together and perform the collectively land in our skins. We go through some questions, scores, states and images to trigger the power and singularity of each body. The journey from the singular to the communal opens the boundaries of what we understand as a body. How does the experience of affection and contagion between bodies dancing build up the possibility of an eventual community? How the party is an event to frame these displacements?

“But perhaps, the party after the sexual-political liberations and imaginations and the social revolutions of the 20th century is about something else. Of a factory of collective sensations. Of traffic of sweating, of possibilities of extending parts of the body in other fragments of bodies; of opening, displacing and unrolling and scheming a use of space together; of experiencing the flesh, the tissues, the skin, without repressive familiar signifier; of discovering and trying a way to move something you did not imagine; of shouting, of singing, of chanting a protest song while a reggaetón plays.... to become physical mass and rhythm; (...) The body of our party is a gigantic body of exits and entrances that pass gestures, figures, words, rhythms, technical knowledge of multiple bodies“ (”Descaretizar la fiesta”, Silvio Lang).

Mystical and urban, pop and underground, sex club and art opening, dramatic and exuberant: MADANII is all of these at the same time, consistently defying any categorisation. That’s because the musician manages to create her own sound from seemingly countless influences – future pop, R&B, electro and much more. Somewhere between East and West, she challenges musical stereotypes, confronting her audience with a unique combination of modern productions, genre-spanning sounds and elements of her Iranian background. When the protests in Iran began, she released the song »Tehran is burning« (based on the well-known Iranian song »Pāiz āmad«) to draw attention to the situation in her parents’ home country. She already wowed us in 2019 as half of the duo MADANII & LLUCID at »Pop-Kultur Nachwuchs« and a year later with an online session. We are all the more delighted that MADANII is returning to our festival with a live show that resembles a striking art performance.

MaHalla OPEN: The Unleashing of the Unlimited. For Berlin Art Week, MaHalla transforms its towering industrial architecture into a vibrant hub of raw artistic energy. MaHalla OPEN sets the stage for eight curators/teams who have convened over 100 international artists to channel the essence of OPEN and embrace the raw power of vulnerability. They invite you to provoke a dialogue between the tangible and the intangible. To the invited artists were granted the freedom to transcend conventions and conquer the stage to put on an electrifying program. MaHalla OPEN is a concept that breaks the boundaries of conventional schedules. It is a fusion of exhibition and festival that deliberately breaks out into the night. MaHalla OPEN is a crucible of experimentation and improvisation that breeds boldness and conveys the conviction that here the realm of possibility knows no bounds.

Performance part of MaHalla OPEN: The Unleashing of the Unlimited.
